چکیده

Iconic gestures are hand movements that represent shapes, objects and functions of a referent. When gesture is restricted, imagery decreases and speech dysfluencies (which are most pronounced when communicating spatial information) increase. Since gesture restriction adversely affects both imagery and the communication of spatial information, many theorists have argued that visuospatial working memory (VSWM) underlies iconic gesture production. Although studies have suggested that there is a strong relationship between iconic gesture production and VSWM, a study has yet to be conducted which tests the effects of visuospatial manipulation upon subsequent iconic gesture production. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between VSWM and iconic gesture production by manipulating the degree of visuospatial distraction without imposing restriction upon the hands. Preliminary findings suggest that the presence of a visuospatial distractor affects narrative production and that more distracting visual stimuli are associated with lower iconic gesture rates.

Effects of the restriction of hand gestures on disfluency

This paper describes an experimental pilot study of disfluency and gesture rates in spontaneous speech where speakers perform a communication task in three conditions: hands free, one arm immobilized, both arms immobilized. Previous work suggests that the restriction of the ability to gesture can have an impact on the fluency of speech. In particular, it has been found that the inability to pro...

The impact of impaired semantic knowledge on spontaneous iconic gesture production

BACKGROUND Previous research has found that people with aphasia produce more spontaneous iconic gesture than control participants, especially during word-finding difficulties. There is some evidence that impaired semantic knowledge impacts on the diversity of gestural handshapes, as well as the frequency of gesture production. However, no previous research has explored how impaired semantic kno...

What can iconic gestures tell us about the language system? A case of conduction aphasia.

BACKGROUND Speech and language therapists rarely analyse iconic gesture when assessing a client with aphasia, despite a growing body of research suggesting that language and gesture are part of either the same system or two highly integrated systems. This may be because there has been limited research that has systematically analysed iconic gesture production by people with aphasia. AIMS The ...

Iconic gesture in normal language and word searching conditions: a case of conduction aphasia.

Although there is a substantive body of research about the language used by individuals with aphasia, relatively little is known about their spontaneous iconic gesture. A single case study of LT, an individual with conduction aphasia indicated qualitative differences between the spontaneous iconic gestures produced alongside fluent speech and in tip of the tongue states. The current study exami...

Gesture-sign interface in hearing non-signers' first exposure to sign

Natural sign languages and gestures are complex communicative systems that allow the incorporation of features of a referent into their structure. They differ, however, in that signs are more conventionalised because they consist of meaningless phonological parameters. There is some evidence that despite non-signers finding iconic signs more memorable they can have more difficulty at articulati...
